--- News Story Released 6-6-2012 ---

Utah Highway Patrol Troopers may be a familiar sight on the freeway with their stark white cars emblazoned with the a yellow and brown beehive.  And at some point in time you’ve probably hit the brakes hoping they didn’t notice how fast you were going.  Guilt, fear and racing hearts are probably too frequent of a response as we travel Utah’s roads and cross paths with a Trooper.  So it may surprise you to learn that many of these UHP troopers have racing hearts as well.  But not necessarily for the same reasons.  Many of these Troopers are on a special team of bike riders racing for a cure to MS.

Team UHP, consisting of Troopers, their familes, and friends, participates annually in Bike MS.  The 26th annual Bike MS: Harmons Best Dam Bike Ride will take place June 23-24 in Logan Utah and will benefit the MS Society in raising funds to find the cure to multiple sclerosis.  Volunteers from Utah and Idaho will gather to ride between 40 and 175 miles.  This year over 2000 people will ride for the cause.  The people are grouped according to teams that each set fundraising goals to help find the cure.

Team UHP was founded in 1999 by LT Chris Simmons and LT Mike Loveland and consisted of only 4 riders.  The lieutenants and their wives rode to draw awareness to the disease that had affected LT Simmons’ grandmother.  Since its humble beginnings in 1999 the team has grown to over 75 volunteers strong.

Team control has since been passed to Trooper Steven Martin and his wife Chree.  The team now staffs a rest stop, provides traffic control and raises over $35,000 for the cause each year.  And in 2011, Team UHP won best jersey and best rest stop.

As part of their award winning rest stop they provide the riders with honey sticks for energy

Team UHP contacted Kyle Kanno at The Honey Jar to see about getting some honey sticks.  But in addition to the honey sticks the team also found another fundraising partner.

"She didn't realize dad was retired UHP and probably didn't expect us to offer to help with the fundraising."  Kanno said, "Just last week I was thinking we should get more involved in the community.  Find some way to give back.  This seemed like the perfect fit, almost like it was meant to bee...(pun intended)"

Kyle said The Honey Jar will be donating 15% of its sales during the weeks leading up to the race to help Team UHP reach and hopefully surpass their goal of $35,000.  Honey can be bought online or at any Harmons Grocery Stores.  For a list of other places to buy The Honey Jar's all natural raw honey visit thehoneyjarhome.com/available-near-you
